Queensland State Sponsorship Overview (2024-25 Financial Year)

Queensland offers state sponsorship for eligible skilled workers for both the 190 (permanent residency) and 491 (regional temporary residency) visas. For the 2024-25 financial year, Queensland has been allocated 1,200 state sponsorship slots, with 600 for the 190 visa and 600 for the 491 visa. Due to high competition, applicants typically need to score 95 points or higher.

Application Requirements

Federal Requirements

  • Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect with a minimum score of 65 points (including state sponsorship points).
  • Hold a relevant skills assessment for the nominated occupation.
  • Be under 45 years of age.
  • Meet at least “Competent English” language requirements (or higher, based on occupation assessment).

Additional Queensland Requirements

  • Full-time work in the nominated occupation in Queensland (491 visa applicants must work in a regional area).
  • Meet minimum salary requirements (e.g., $70,000, depending on the occupation).
  • Have verified work experience in the occupation and/or regional areas.

Process

  • Submit EOI: Fill out and submit the EOI in SkillSelect, selecting Queensland as your nominated state.
  • Register Interest (ROI): Submit an ROI including your EOI number, passport details, residence and employment information, etc.
  • Selected and Invited: Queensland will select candidates based on competitiveness and send invitations.
  • Submit State Sponsorship Application: Submit required documents and pay the application fee (non-refundable) within 14 days of receiving the invitation.
  • Federal Visa Application: After receiving state sponsorship, submit the federal visa application to the Department of Home Affairs.

Fees

Queensland state sponsorship application fee is approximately $300-$500 (depending on the visa type). Additionally, a federal visa application fee is required, with the primary applicant’s fee being $4,240.

Processing Time

  • State Sponsorship Processing: Typically 6-8 weeks.
  • Federal Visa Processing: 491 visas typically take 6-9 months, with 190 visas potentially processing slightly faster.
  • Due to limited quotas and high competition, it is recommended for applicants to enhance their points (e.g., improve English scores, gain more work experience, or gain points through a partner) to increase the chances of being invited. If feasible, applicants may also consider sponsorship opportunities from other states.
