The 884 visa is a temporary residency visa designed for aged parents sponsored by their Australian-resident children. It is valid for two years, during which applicants must apply for the 864 permanent visa to obtain permanent residency. Applicants must be in Australia both at the time of application and when the visa is granted. Eligibility Criteria
Age Requirement
- Male applicants must be 65 years or older.
- Female applicants must have reached the retirement age set by Australia’s social security system.
Sponsorship Requirements
- The applicant’s child must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
- The sponsoring child must have lived in Australia for at least two years (exceptions may apply in special cases).
Balance of Family Test
- At least half of the applicant’s children must be settled in Australia, or
- The number of children residing in Australia must be greater than in any other single country.
- The test includes biological, step, and adopted children, regardless of their marital status, financial situation, or residence.
Health & Character Requirements
- The applicant and all dependent applicants must meet Australia’s health and character standards.
