485 Applicants note: GD does not count as two years of study in Australia!!

The GD program has long been a popular choice for international students to complete two years of study, but the Immigration Department changed the PAM (internal guidelines, commonly known as the guidance Manual for visa officers to handle cases) and removed GD from the list of courses that meet the two-year study requirement, and many applicants were refused visas because of this!

Although there is a conflict between the immigration law and the PAM, the Immigration Department still maintains the statement in the PAM at present, that is, GD cannot be counted as a 2-year study.

We know that for skilled migrant 485 applicants, an important condition for visa is to meet the two-year study requirements in Australia.

An unsatisfactory situation

1. If GD is the final qualification obtained before applying for 485, it cannot apply for any stream of 485.

2. If the courses used to meet the study requirements in Australia are:

•2 1-year GD, or

•1 year GD+1 year Master, or

•1 year GD+1.5 years Master,

Can not get 5 points of Australian study bonus!!!

This will directly affect the applicant's EOI score, and it is believed that many skilled immigrant visas 189, 489, and 190 submitted in this case will be rejected!

Exceptional case

After completing 1 year of GD, apply for Master or Bachelor courses and get credit deduction, or the two are one package, then the GD study time can be counted as part of 2 years of study.

For example, after studying a one-year Graduate Diploma of Accounting, I can apply for a two-year MPA registered with CRICOS, get a half-year credit deduction and finally get an offer of 1.5 years MPA. In this case, 1 year of GD plus 1.5 years of Master can be considered as completing 2 years of study.

But!! What if!!

• Completion of a 1.5 year MPA with 1 year GD plus CRICOS registration will not meet the 2 year study requirement!

• It is not feasible to take half a year of GC or GD to gain professional background and then apply for a 1.5 year master program.

• Those studied after a degree program, such as the Bachelor of Accounting + Graduate Diploma of Accounting. Because this GD program has nothing to do with obtaining a bachelor's degree.

In one sentence, the Immigration Bureau does not recognize GD alone at present, of course, including GC!
