Australia has reached an agreement with China to open up work and holiday visas for Chinese citizens. The visa allows up to 5000 young Chinese with higher education and English language skills to travel to Australia for a working holiday.

Working and holiday visas provide a unique, once in a lifetime opportunity for Chinese participants. It is also an opportunity for cultural exchanges and closer cultural ties between China and Australia.

People's Republic of China passport holders are required to submit their first Working and Holiday (462) visa application by submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI). At present, the EOI application for the Australian Working Holiday Visa has closed and we will announce the opening time of the next EOI application on this website.

 

If your expression of interest is selected, Home Affairs will send you an invitation to submit your first Working and Holiday (462) visa application online. You can only apply for your first Working and Holiday (Category 462) visa if you have received an invitation and you must apply online. Paper applications will no longer be used. We will update this website to inform you when the invitation process starts.

 

Please note that selecting an Expression of Interest (EOI) is a random process and there are no criteria.

Yes, Australia has an agreement with China to open up work and holiday visas for Chinese nationals from 2015.

4. What do I do after I submit my EOI?

If you have submitted an expression of interest and are selected, you will receive an invitation to apply for the first Working holiday visa (visa category 462). The selection of EOI applications is a random process without any conditional basis.

5. How long is an Expression of Interest (EOI) valid?

Expressions of interest will remain in the selection pool until June 2023.

If your EOI is selected, you can only use it to apply for your first Working and Holiday (Category 462) visa at once, within the time frame provided in the invitation email.

6. If my EOI is selected, how long do I have to submit my application?

If you receive an invitation to apply for your first Working and Holiday (Category 462) visa, you will be provided with a time frame for your online application.

 

If you do not submit your application by the specified date, the invitation letter will be invalid and you will not be able to submit your application. In addition, you will not be invited again during this EOI selection period.

 

7. How many Expressions of Interest (EOI) can I submit?

Only one Expression of Interest (EOI) per person can be accepted. Please do not submit multiple expressions of interest.

Your Expression of Interest (EOI) will remain in the selection pool until June 2023.

 

8. How many young Chinese can apply for work and holiday visas?

The annual quota for Chinese working and holiday visa applicants is 5,000. If the current year's quota is full, Australia will accept new applications in the next program year.

9. What can I do in Australia with a work and holiday visa?

Working and Holiday (Category 462) visa holders can engage in cultural exchange activities and tourism. In addition, the visa holder can:

• Stay in Australia for 12 months after first entry;
• Work for 12 months during your stay in Australia;

• can work for any employer for more than 6 months as of December 31, 2022; and
• Study for four months.

10. What are the eligibility requirements for a visa?

The general eligibility requirements for Chinese working and holiday visa applicants are as follows:

• Hold a valid Chinese passport;
• Aged 18 or over at the time of submission of the application, but under the age of 31;
• Travel to Australia without children;
• Have sufficient funds to support a working holiday in Australia;
• Having sufficient funds at the end of the working holiday to purchase a return or further travel ticket;
• No record of travelling to Australia on a working holiday (category 417) visa;
Have a higher education qualification, or have completed at least two years of university study;
• Basic proficiency in practical English (equivalent to IELTS score 4.5 or above);
Meet conduct and health requirements;
• A genuine visitor to Australia.

11. Are there any age restrictions for work and holiday visas?

Yes. Chinese Working and holiday visa applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application, but under 31 years of age.

12. What materials do I need to provide in my application?

14. How do I submit an application?

If you have submitted an Expression of Interest (EOI) for your first Working and Holiday (Category 462) visa and are invited to submit your first Working and Holiday (Category 462) visa application, you must submit your application online.

The new EOI process is only available to applicants for the first Working and holiday (462) visa. This process does not apply to fee-free work and holiday visa applications, or second/third Work and holiday (Category 462) visa applications.

Paper applications will no longer be used.

15. Will the annual quota of 5,000 be increased?

The Australian and Chinese governments will consider this issue after a period of implementation of the agreement.

16. How many times can I apply for a Work and Holiday (Category 462) visa?

The Work & Holiday (Category 462) visa will provide participants with a unique, once in a lifetime opportunity. Therefore, participants can only apply for this visa once.

17. I have a Working and Holiday (Category 462) visa but cannot travel to Australia due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On 12 October 2020, the Australian Government announced that working and holiday visa holders who are unable to travel to Australia or leave the country early due to COVID-19 will be allowed to reapply for their working and holiday visa from 1 July 2021 to 31 December 2022 without application fees. Or if you cannot reapply because you are over the age limit, you can ask for a refund of the visa application fee.

If you are outside Australia and have previously held a Work and Holiday (Category 462) visa but are unable to travel to Australia due to COVID-19, you may consider applying for a Work and holiday (Category 462) visa outside Australia without application fees. In this case, because you have been granted a Working and Holiday (Category 462) visa, you do not need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI).

19. In my application, can only IELTS score be used as the sole basis to measure my English proficiency?

20. Do I need to attend an interview when applying for a work and holiday visa?

An interview is not required to apply for a Work and Holiday (Category 462) visa. However, the visa officer may contact you to request additional information.

21. What rights do I have in Australia? What protection does the Australian workplace offer me?

All people working in Australia, including work and holiday visa holders, have their remuneration and working conditions covered by the same workplace laws. The Fair Work Ombudsman is responsible for ensuring that Australian workplace laws are enforced.

22. I have multiple degrees or qualifications. Do I only need to provide the highest degree?

To be eligible for the Working and Holiday (462) visa, applicants must have completed at least two years of university education. You should provide notarial certificates for each degree and transcript in your application.

23. Formal language tests are given only at certain times of the year. When do I need to provide proof that I have "basic working English"?

You must provide proof of English proficiency and other application documents when submitting your visa application. So it's important to complete the exam in your chosen language early.

24. When do I need to pay the application fee?

If you are invited to submit a Working and Holiday (Category 462) visa application, you will be required to pay a visa application fee when you submit your application online.

You do not have to pay to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI).

25. How long is the assessment time for work and holiday visas?

The majority of visa applications will be completed within the specified time for assessment, but for some applications the assessment time may be extended due to personal circumstances, including incomplete visa applications or applicants requiring further information.

26. How long is my first working and holiday visa valid?

If you have been granted your first Work and Holiday (Category 462) visa, the visa is valid for one year from the date of entry into Australia.

27. What are the health requirements?

In order to be granted a Working and Holiday visa (Class 462) visa, the applicant must meet the health requirements.

Please note: My health claim service has been terminated. Health requirements, including the medical examination required for your visa application, can only be determined after you have submitted your application.

28. When should I complete the medical examination?

If you have been invited to submit your first Working and Holiday (Category 462) visa application, please check when to have a medical examination.

If you are not invited to submit your first Working and Holiday (Category 462) visa application, you should not undergo a medical examination as the medical examination report is valid for a maximum of 12 months.

29. What if I have recently had a medical check-up?

If you have undergone a medical examination to apply for an Australian visa in the past 6 to 12 months and you have been invited to submit your first Working and Holiday (Category 462) visa application, please wait for the visa officer to contact you to advise you if further medical examination is required.

30. If I have a medical examination but am not approved, can my medical examination fee be refunded?

No. If you do not receive a visa, your medical examination fee cannot be refunded. The results are valid for 12 months and can be used in other visa applications.
